Background of the Study
Digital communication has transformed the way information is shared and preserved, significantly impacting indigenous language preservation in Asaba. The rise of social media, messaging apps, and online platforms has created new avenues for the documentation and dissemination of indigenous languages (Okon, 2023). These digital tools offer opportunities for cultural revitalization by enabling community members to share traditional stories, proverbs, and linguistic practices with a wider audience (Ifeanyi, 2024). However, the digital divide and the dominance of global languages on digital platforms pose challenges to the sustained use of local languages. This study explores how digital communication technologies are being utilized to preserve indigenous languages in Asaba, evaluating both the benefits and limitations of these approaches. It investigates the role of community-driven digital initiatives and the potential of online educational programs to enhance language retention and revitalization efforts (Obi, 2025). The research further considers the balance between modern communication demands and the need to maintain cultural authenticity.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of digital communication, indigenous languages in Asaba face the risk of marginalization due to the overwhelming presence of global languages online. The rapid digital transformation has not been matched by adequate efforts to adapt indigenous language preservation strategies, resulting in reduced intergenerational transmission and cultural dilution. This study seeks to understand the challenges and opportunities presented by digital communication for indigenous language preservation, aiming to propose sustainable digital initiatives that support linguistic diversity (Obi, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the role of digital communication in promoting indigenous language preservation in Asaba.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of online platforms in sustaining indigenous linguistic practices.
  3. To recommend digital strategies that enhance the retention and revitalization of indigenous languages.

Research Questions:

  1. How is digital communication being used to preserve indigenous languages in Asaba?
  2. What are the main challenges faced by digital platforms in supporting indigenous language use?
  3. What digital strategies can effectively promote indigenous language retention?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Digital communication positively influences the preservation of indigenous languages.
  2. Global language dominance on digital platforms hinders indigenous language use.
  3. Community-driven digital initiatives enhance indigenous language retention.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the role of digital communication in indigenous language preservation, offering insights into effective strategies for cultural revitalization. The findings will guide policymakers, educators, and community leaders in developing digital initiatives that support linguistic diversity and cultural heritage in Asaba (Ifeanyi, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to analyzing the influence of digital communication on indigenous language preservation in Asaba Local Government Area, focusing on digital platforms and community initiatives.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Digital Communication: The use of electronic platforms to share information.
  • Indigenous Language: A native language intrinsic to the cultural identity of a community.
  • Preservation: The act of maintaining and protecting cultural heritage.
