Background of the Study
Digital communication has transformed the way information is shared and preserved, significantly impacting indigenous language preservation in Asaba. The rise of social media, messaging apps, and online platforms has created new avenues for the documentation and dissemination of indigenous languages (Okon, 2023). These digital tools offer opportunities for cultural revitalization by enabling community members to share traditional stories, proverbs, and linguistic practices with a wider audience (Ifeanyi, 2024). However, the digital divide and the dominance of global languages on digital platforms pose challenges to the sustained use of local languages. This study explores how digital communication technologies are being utilized to preserve indigenous languages in Asaba, evaluating both the benefits and limitations of these approaches. It investigates the role of community-driven digital initiatives and the potential of online educational programs to enhance language retention and revitalization efforts (Obi, 2025). The research further considers the balance between modern communication demands and the need to maintain cultural authenticity.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of digital communication, indigenous languages in Asaba face the risk of marginalization due to the overwhelming presence of global languages online. The rapid digital transformation has not been matched by adequate efforts to adapt indigenous language preservation strategies, resulting in reduced intergenerational transmission and cultural dilution. This study seeks to understand the challenges and opportunities presented by digital communication for indigenous language preservation, aiming to propose sustainable digital initiatives that support linguistic diversity (Obi, 2025).
